Pastor’s Pen

Brooks Robinson, the Hall of Fame third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles 1955-1977, won 16 consecutive Gold Glove awards. He literally dominated the left side of the baseball infield with his dazzling defense, and is still arguably the best third baseman ever to play the game.

During his baseball career he took a strong stand for Christ and influenced many lives, young and old. He said this about facing the temptations offered by the unnatural life of professional sports:

"Before I became a Christian, I knew when I sinned and I regretted it. I’ve been brought up in a church-going family. I had principles and I was aware when they were violated. But it didn’t bother me too much. But as a Christian, things are different. When I commit a sin, there’s nothing casual about how I feel. I’m not simply violating a self-created ‘code of honor.’ I know now that I am sinning against the One who gave His life for me on the cross."

Was he really being honest, or was it just religious talk? Currently Brooks is a management assistant for Crown Central Petroleum, still lives in the Baltimore area, remains active in the Professional Baseball Players Association and serves on the boards of several community service organizations. Baseball advanced his business career, but Jesus formed his spiritual character.

"The Way of the Cross"
Chance Perkins

"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." (Gal. 6:14)

In a classic Twilight Zone episode from 1960, an American on a walking trip through central Europe gets caught in a raging storm.  Staggering through the blinding rain, he chances upon an imposing medieval castle.  It is a hermitage for a brotherhood of monks.  The reclusive monks reluctantly take him in.

Later that night, the American discovers a cell with a man locked inside. An ancient wooden staff bolts the door.  The prisoner claims he’s being held captive by the “insane” head monk, Brother Jerome.  He pleads for the American to release him. The prisoner’s kindly face and gently voice win him over. The American confronts Brother Jerome, who declares that the prisoner is actually none other than Satan, “the father of lies,” held captive by the Staff of Truth, the one barrier he cannot pass.

This incredible claim convinces the American that Jerome is indeed mad.  As soon as he gets the chance, he releases the prisoner—who immediately transforms into a hideous, horned demon and vanishes in a puff of smoke! The stunned American is horrified at the realization of what he has done. Jerome responds sympathetically.  “I’m sorry for you, my son.  All your life you will remember this night and whom you have turned loose upon the world.”  “I didn’t believe you,” the American replies. “I saw him and didn’t recognize him”—to which Jerome solemnly observes, “That is man’s weakness…and Satan’s strength.”

“Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

                   “Growing Together”

                                                Barry Whedbee

We took 21 senior adults to Post this past Sunday to the Ragtown Gospel Theater and had a great time together.  I would like to encourage all senior adults to participate in our monthly Young at Heart Luncheon and monthly Young at Heart Game Night.  We also occasionally make trips to other places as we did this past Sunday afternoon.  It will help you stay “Young at Heart” if you will get out and fellowship with others.  You will be glad you did.

Marriage Enrichment Classes will begin this Sunday, September 14th, at 5pm in Room 204.  This will be a 9 week study of different marriage issues.  This material is good for all couples who are married or those who will soon marry.  We will follow the video teaching with discussion and activities.  The teachings will be from the leading marriage speakers in our country:  Les & Leslie Parrott, Wellington Boone, Tim LaHaye, Gary Smalley, and Jim Burns.  Each session will focus on different areas that couples often struggle with.  I encourage you and your spouse to attend together if possible, but you will benefit even if your spouse can’t come.

Mark your calendars for a special weekend in the life of our church, September 20-21.  On Saturday, September 20th, at 9am, we will be hosting an area wide event.  There will be a number of conferences to choose from:  Training for Sunday School teachers by age division, training for new/newer teachers, an in-depth look at Texas Hope 2010, mission opportunities, Hispanic leadership training, having a family friendly church, Christian Women’s Job Corps and details to begin one, and a worship planning conference which will include an overview of the New Baptist Hymnal that is about to come out.
